“Ditches are how water flows and moves out of communities and roads, and so we need to make sure that those ditches are clear, that the pipes don’t have any obstructions or debris in them, so when it rains the water can actually drain to where it’s supposed to go, and so this is one of the most important and fundamental parts of preventing flooding in our community,” Skardon said.

However, Skardon said the project isn’t complete, and the city still needs to receive easements on properties to be able to clear the rest of the ditches.

“Part of our hope here is that we’re able to show the success when the city can come in and clear those ditches where we have the permission to go behind the homes and do that and show that it’s not a super invasive process and there are results,” Skardon said.

While she says she understands a mistrust of government from historic settlement communities like Ferguson, she encourages the remaining property owners to reach out to Skardon and the city to learn more.
