Mini-Roundabout Coming to James Island

A mini change is expected to make a big impact on one of the James Island intersections that residents complain about most.
The city of Charleston plans to install its first mini roundabout at the intersection of Old Military Road, at Secessionville Road and Grimball Road Extension, the City Council decided during its July 14 meeting.
“This is such a tricky intersection on James Island. ... It’s something I’ve heard about from so many constituents,” said Councilwoman Leslie Skardon, who represents James Island. “This is fantastic. I’m absolutely thrilled.”
This “innovative new design” will be flush enough that emergency vehicles can travel over it, and its 22-foot diameter is small enough that it won’t encroach on existing properties or stormwater infrastructure, Skardon said. She plans to host a public meeting and drop off information to neighbors ahead of the construction.
The mini roundabout is expected to be installed “as soon as possible,” or sometime within the next six months, according to the city’s director of Traffic and Transportation, Michael Mathis.
City Council also made moves to allow for a different roundabout to come to the opposite side of the city. A full-size roundabout is proposed on Daniel Island, at Seven Farms Drive and River Landing Drive.
Charleston approved a maintenance agreement so the Daniel Island Town Association can help the city maintain the project, which is part of the Berkeley County Sales Tax, Mathis said.
